Riverside Nursery is a family owned and operated nursery located in Delaware, Ohio. (Directions) Our goal is to provide native tree and shrubs for commercial and residential customers. Local genetics are very important to the overall health and adaptability of trees. Most of our native trees are grown from seed collected in central Ohio and surrounding areas. Our parent trees must be large, well shaped trees with a broad canopy. Some are over 4' in diameter and are hundreds of years old. Traits like these are the evidence of superior genetics that we look for in seed stock. We believe that the importance of growing trees with local genetics will only increase in the future. We find our big seed trees tucked away on river banks, in old cemeteries and in farm fields. In the fall it's a race between us and the squirrels to collect the seeds that will be our future crop. After planting we hand select the best seedlings for size, shape and growth rate and grow them out.
All of our trees are grown in containers scientifically designed to maximize root growth. Each stage of growth is designed to produce or enhance a fibrous, mop-like root. This root has hundreds of growing points which facilitates rapid establishment in your landscape. This allows our trees to be successfully transplanted at any time of the year. We use a specially blended media in each 3G pot that makes the tree light and easily planted by one person.
When you buy a tree from Riverside Nursery you purchase all the roots the tree ever grew. This is the key to survival and a successful transplant. Trees that are grown in smooth sided containers or are balled and burlapped should be avoided as these growing practices leave most of the roots (90%+) behind when they are dug up. Balled and burlapped trees have a much higher mortality rate and have to regrow lost root before the leaves and branches can begin to grow. Our trees do not have damaged roots thus are ready to grow when you plant them.
2008 Tree and Seedling Pricing
The target size of our trees is between 5' and 6' tall and up to 3/4" caliper in a 3 gallon (3G) container. We also have smaller seedlings in flats. Seedlings are 15" to 48" depending on variety. We have thousands of trees in various sizes at different stages of production; all are ready to be transplanted into your landscape.
Fall Mums
Riverside Nursery grows thousands of beautiful fall mums in 8" and 12" plastic terra cotta pots and 14" bushel baskets. Please contact us as to availability but in general you are welcome to visit and choose the ones you want. Please give us a call to make sure we're in...fall is a very busy time delivering mums and trees.
